A beguiling new hotel has opened in Rome’s Trastevere district: the 78-room Donna Camilla Savelli Hotel, which occupies a convent built in the mid-17th century for a reclusive order of Augustinian nuns. Its designer was Baroque architect Francesco Borromini, noted for his churches of San Carlo alle Quattro Fontane and Sant’Ivo della Sapienza, both in Rome. A monumental marble staircase mounts to guest chambers decorated in a blending of modern and traditional styles. Plus there’s Mass every morning in the chapel that adjoins the hotel, faithfully attended by five nuns who still live on the old convent premises. Doubles from about $325.
