Angels fall to Rockies, 11-10

AT THE PLATE: Juan Rivera had a big day, going three for four with a home run and a pair of doubles, scoring three runs and driving in two. The two RBIs give him a team-leading nine for the spring. Catcher Jeff Mathis also reached base three times, doubling, drawing a walk and getting hit by a pitch, scoring twice and driving in two runs.

ON THE MOUND: In his third outing of the spring Scott Kazmir lasted four innings, giving up three runs on five hits and a walk. The runs came during a third-inning rally that featured a triple, two doubles and a walk. The bullpen didn’t fare as well, however, with Jason Bulger giving up a run on two hits in his only inning and Juan Mateo and Nick Pugliese -- summoned from minor league camp to make the long trip to Tucson -- giving up five ninth-inning runs.

EXTRA BASES: Outfield prospect Mike Trout, who was in high school at this time last year, was also called up from minor league camp and made an impression with a good eighth-inning at-bat that produced a two-run triple. It also produced a good one-liner from Coach Mike Scioscia/, who also invoked the name of former Rookie of the Year Tim Salmon. “We’re doing pretty good with those fish names aren’t we? Salmon, Trout,” he said.

UP NEXT: Jered Weaver will face Luke French and the Seattle Mariners in a 1 p.m. game in Tempe. The Angels were scheduled to face Cliff Lee, but he was scratched with an abdominal strain.
