‘Krampus’ graphic novel provides a prequel to the holiday horror film

We know that Santa Claus rewards the good children on Christmas, but folklore also warns of a mythical counterpart who punishes naughty children: Krampus. Director Michael Dougherty, who’s horror comedy film “Krampus” will be released Dec. 4, decided to further expand the creature’s lore with a prequel graphic novel, “Krampus: Shadow of Saint Nicholas.”
The comic is an anthology that includes three tales centering on morality, or the lack thereof. A drunken mall Santa, a dysfunctional cop and a rich “Scrooge”-like man are the victims in these holiday stories. Dougherty is no stranger to this type of treatment -- he recently also released a “Trick ‘R Treat” graphic novel with multiple stories in it.

Joining Dougherty in scripting the tales are “Krampus” co-screenwriters Zach Shields and Todd Casey and artists Fiona Staples (“Saga”), Christian Dibari (“Hoax Hunters”), Maan House (“Witchblade”), and Stuart Sayger (“Bram Stoker’s Death Ship”).
