What’s that on the horizon? It’s a weekend of classic wide-screen westerns coming to Beverly Hills.

If westerns on a wide screen are your vice, you have a big weekend coming up. Aug. 12-14 will provide an opportunity to see five well-loved oaters as Laemmle’s Anniversary Classics Western Weekend unspools at the Ahrya Fine Arts Theater in Beverly Hills.
Celebrating its 60th anniversary is the oldest of the group, the John Ford/John Wayne classic “The Searchers.” The newest of the five at a mere 26 years old is Kevin Costner’s multi-Oscar winning “Dances With Wolves.”
Sharing a 50th anniversary this year are the Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood “The Good, The Bad and the Ugly” and Richard Brooks’ sardonic “The Professionals” starring Burt Lancaster, Lee Marvin, Robert Ryan and Woody Strode.
Arguably the most surprising of the five films is 1961’s “The Misfits,” which was directed by John Huston from a script by Arthur Miller and starred Miller’s wife Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable and Montgomery Clift. As an elegiac modern Western, it can’t be beaten.
