Academy announces 15 documentary features advancing in the race for Oscar

“He Named Me Malala,” “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief,” the Amy Winehouse film “Amy” and Michael Moore’s “Where to Invade Next” are among the 15 documentary features announced Tuesday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as having advanced in the Oscars voting process.
No fewer than 124 documentaries were submitted in this category.

Also making the cut Tuesday: “Best of Enemies,” “Cartel Land,” “Heart of a Dog,” “The Hunting Ground,” “Listen to Me Marlon,” “The Look of Silence,” “Meru,” “3 1/2 Minutes, 10 Bullets,” “We Come as Friends,” “What Happened, Miss Simone?” and “Winter on Fire.”
From this list, documentary branch members will select the five nominees.
The Oscar nominations will be announced Jan. 14. The 88th Oscars are scheduled to be presented Feb. 28 at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland in Los Angeles.
