A deadly confrontation between a Vista man and San Diego County sheriff’s deputies Friday night began with deputies attempting to arrest the man on a felony drug warrant, officials said.
Four deputies from the gang unit went to an apartment building in Vista to serve the warrant around 6:15 p.m. Friday.
After finding the suspect in a garage, deputies ordered him to put up his hands, said homicide Lt. Glenn Giannantonio.
“Instead of complying, the suspect reached both of his hands down to his waistband” as if reaching for a weapon, Giannantonio said.
Fearing for their safety, two deputies opened fire, Giannantonio said. The suspect was dead at the scene.
The suspect’s name was not released.
