The 101 Freeway was shut down in both directions at Mission Road in Los Angeles for hours Thursday afternoon after a man climbed onto a freeway sign, authorities said.
Officers were called to the scene about 2:10 p.m and closed the freeway soon after, snarling traffic throughout downtown, California Highway Patrol Officer Stephan Brandt said. Two lanes of the southbound freeway were reopened shortly before 5 p.m.
After a few hours, the man climbed down a fire ladder and authorities took him into custody. Crews cleared rescue cushions placed on the roadway below him, and the freeway was fully reopened about 6 p.m.
It’s unclear why the man climbed the sign.
