Mini heat wave could set some records

A mini heat wave peaking Wednesday could cause record high temperatures in parts of Southern California, forecasters said.

“We’re going to be near record high temperatures for this time of year,” said meteorologist Todd Hall of the National Weather Service in Oxnard. “Today will be the hottest day of the week.”

At about 20 minutes before noon, Hall said, it was 88 degrees at Los Angeles International Airport. The record for this date is 90.

In Burbank, where the record is 91 degrees, it was 88. In Camarillo, it was 92, tying a record set in 1949.

But for those in downtown L.A., a new record was less likely. The record high for this date is 96, and it was only 87 degrees shortly before noon.

Hall said temperatures jumped quickly Wednesday and that the heat will carry over to Thursday morning.

“We’ll still see some warm temperatures tomorrow morning,” he said, but then “all of the sudden that sea breeze will come in and kick things down” in the afternoon.

Angelenos who like the heat would do well to revel in the warmth while it’s around. Highs over the weekend are expected to be much lower, with temperatures in the 60s predicted for Saturday.
