Human remains were discovered Tuesday along a bank of the San Gabriel River in the Pico Rivera area.
The grisly find was made by Los Angeles County flood-control workers conducting a survey along a water causeway, authorities said.
Homicide investigators were dispatched to the area after the remains were found Tuesday about 8:30 a.m., the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.
Department officials said the remains were in an area north of the Whittier Narrows Dam along the west bank of the river not far from Bicentennial Park in Pico Rivera. The remains were believed to have been at the location for several months.
Investigators removed the remains, which will require forensic testing to determine the victim’s identification and the cause and time of death, authorities said.
Anyone with information is asked to call detectives at (323) 890-5500.
