Military suspends flyovers at baseball games, citing budget cuts

The Padres and Angels are home this week.

Pitchers will pitch and hitters will hit at the home openers Tuesday and the rest of the week.

But what fans in San Diego and Anaheim will not see are the flyovers of military planes that have become a tradition at outdoor sporting events.

The Department of Defense has banned aerial demonstrations, including flyovers, due to the budget cutbacks called sequestration.

“We’ll continue to focus our use of current funds on ensuring Marines are equipped and trained to fight wherever and whenever called to,” said a spokesman for the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing at the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station in San Diego.

For now, Miramar’s annual air show, billed as the largest such show in the country, with attendance topping 700,000, is still scheduled for October.

But it hasn’t been decided whether the Navy’s demonstration team, the Blue Angels, will be part of the show, the Marine spokesman said.
