A 5-year-old child shot a 3-year-old girl at a home in Colorado on Monday.
Pueblo, Colo., police responded to the report of a child shot about 10:15 a.m., according to a news release from police.
The bullet pierced an undisclosed area of the girl’s body, but did not hit any bones, police said. The child remains in critical, but stable, condition in a Colorado Springs hospital.
A third child, a 9-year-old boy, found the unattended gun in the house and brought it outside for the others to see, police said. That is when the shooting occurred.
The mother of the victim and her boyfriend were home at the time of the shooting, police said. The boyfriend, 22-year-old Adrian Chavez, was arrested on suspicion of child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury and an additional outstanding warrant.
Police said the 9-year-old told them he knew how to operate the gun from playing first-person shooter video games.
