Letters: UC Riverside’s pricey new leader

Re “A new chief for a UC campus,” Aug. 9
University of California President Mark G. Yudof stated that “it’s a philosophical disagreement” in defending the 9% higher salary ($354,000) for the new UC Riverside chancellor. No, it’s basic math.
The increase may be paid for by private contributions to the university, but now those contributions won’t be used to keep tuitions low, increase class offerings or pay professors and staff.
The UC Board of Regents may feel justified in paying more than twice the compensation to every state governor in the nation to persuade him to live in a campus residence in Southern California instead of spending winters in Michigan. However, I don’t remember the last time I heard of anyone attending a university because its chancellor far outperformed others.
