It took the Laguna Beach Age Group Water Polo’s 10-and-Under coed team just seconds to establish domination against rival Corona del Mar in the championship game of the Sprague Cup Sunday at the William Woollett Aquatic Center in Irvine.
Laguna scored just 17 seconds into the finale of the 46th annual tournament that was played over two days and also involved club teams from Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Orange County Water Polo and SOCAL. The quick start propelled Laguna to an 18-13 victory.
Sandonica Rodriguez scored four goals and teammate Akio Andersen planted three more, all in the first quarter, which allowed Laguna to build a 7-3 lead. Corona del Mar started a comeback in the second quarter after Laguna goalie Trent Sadler was whistled for his third penalty of the game. But the locals weren’t deterred and goals by Rodriguez, Nolan Del Toro and Connor Hauer each scoring a goal, and Cade Baldridge taking over goalie duties, Laguna was able to maintain control.
Goals by Hauer, Rodriguez, Del Toro and Bella Baldridge in the third quarter, gave Laguna a two-goal cushion entering the fourth quarter.
Del Toro scored again in the fourth quarter as Laguna finished off Corona del Mar.
