Baseball: Junior Nick Sprengel strikes out 12 for El Dorado

The word is spreading: Junior Nick Sprengel of El Dorado is quite a pitcher. He struck out 12 on Wednesday in handing Esperanza its first defeat, a 6-0 decision in a Century League game.
In the Trinity League, Anaheim Servite improved to 2-0 with a 7-3 victory over Santa Margarita. Zach Huarte had two RBIs and junior Nigel Ward threw a complete game, allowing no earned runs. JSerra also is 2-0 after a 5-4 win over St. John Bosco. Jake Pries had a triple and two RBIs. St. John Bosco’s Jesus Mercado went four for four. Servite plays JSerra on Thursday at 3:15 p.m. at Angel Stadium.
Orange Lutheran scored a run in the first inning off Charlie Vorsheck of Mater Dei, and Garett King made it hold up in a 1-0 victory. King allowed seven hits, struck out five and walked none. Vorsheck allowed two hits, struck out five and walked five.
At USC, Bishop Amat defeated San Fernando, 6-3, in eight innings. Scott Hurst had five RBIs, including a three-run double in the eighth.
In the Foothill League, Hart received a two-run home run from Cody Miller in the sixth inning to defeat Canyon, 2-1. Jack Ralston and Troy Gilbert combined on a two-hitter. Eric Little threw a three-hitter in Saugus’ 1-0 win over Golden Valley. Jaiden France threw a three-hitter for Golden Valley, with the only run scoring on a balk.
West Ranch outlasted Valencia, 8-7. Jake Spurlin had two hits, incuding a two-run double, and finished with three RBIs. Davis LeBarron and Addison Jackson added two hits apiece. Josh Kovach threw 2 1/3 innings scoreless relief to earn the save.
In the East Valley League, Andrew Marmor pitched a complete game and Eddie Torres broke a 1-1 tie with a two-run double in the fifth to lift North Hollywood past Verdugo Hills, 3-1.
In the Marmonte League, Royal improved to 6-0 overall with a 4-3 win over Simi Valley. A four-run fourth was the difference. Jake Edwards had a pinch-hit RBI single in the inning. Royal survived 10 walks. Adrian Acosta had two hits for Simi Valley. Agoura defeated Calabasas, 10-4. Dylan Bahr had three hits and Ryan Fineman contributed a two-run home run.
Jackson Simonsgaard continued his dominating pitching, striking out six, walking one and allowing seven hits in Thousand Oaks’ 3-0 win over Westlake. He has 24 strikeouts and three walks in 21 scoreless innings this season. Joey Hunn hit a home run for the Lancers. Moorpark defeated Newbury Park, 4-1. Trevor Weston threw six innings.
Matt Cassin had the game-winning RBI in the eighth inning to give Crespi a 4-3 victory over Mira Costa. He had two hits and two RBIs. Jacob Villela also had two hits.
Cypress defeated Peninsula, 5-4, and 2-0. Elijah Skipps had two hits and two RBIs in the second game. Five pitchers combined for 10 strikeouts.
Taft defeated Bell, 12-11. Alex Rodarte had the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh. Burbank and Granada Hills tied, 3-3. JB Garcia had two hits for the Highlanders.
Brian Gallagher threw six shutout innings in El Camino Real’s 8-0 win over Glendale. Trevor Dergazarian had two hits. Crescenta Valley defeated Birmingham, 3-0, on a no-hitter by Tanner Carrico. Birmingham had only one baserunner in the game.
