Baseball: Daniel Caruso throws no-hitter to lift Loyola in Mission League opener

Daniel Caruso of Loyola saved his best pitching performance of the early baseball season for the opening of Mission League play on Tuesday.

The Baylor-bound senior struck out 12, walked one and threw a no-hitter in Loyola’s 3-0 victory over Alemany. Joe Fortin had a two-run double. Nik Trapani added an RBI double.

Chaminade 7, Harvard-Westlake 3: Washington-bound Tommy Costello came through with a complete game to lift the Eagles to an important opening win in the Mission League.

Crespi 7, St. Francis 4: Danny Silva had three hits for Crespi. Chris Dehn added three RBIs.

Gahr 9, Corona 2: Chris Corral pitched Gahr to its fifth consecutive victory. Jesus Salazar and Michael Perez each had two hits. Perez hit a home run.

Mission Viejo 3-11, Edison 0-5: Tanner Bibee threw a three-hitter, striking out six and walking none, in a complete game in the first game.

Upland 2, Damien 0: Adrian Mardueno threw a complete game to outduel Nick Lodolo, who struck out 12 for Damien.

North 9, Valley View 1: Shane Martinez had two hits and four RBIs to lead North.

Chatsworth 5, Montebello 0: Josh Garcia hit a two-run home run and Ryan Roche threw a complete-game shutout for the Chancellors.

Orange Lutheran 6, Capistrano Valley 0: Four pitchers combined for the shutout in game one. Aaron Kim had a home run, double and three RBIs.

St. Paul 6, Cathedral 3: St. Paul got the win in a league opener.

Bishop Montgomery 2, South Torrance 1: The Knights got the Del Rey League win.

La Salle 4, Gardena Serra 3: Two hits each for Ethan Patrick and Sammy Martinez. Ryan Garcia got the save.

Great Oak 11, Sage Creek 0: Chris Begg had three hits and three RBIs.

Glendora 4, Redlands East Valley 3: Jacob Nemeth had a game-winning double to rally Glendora. Jake Bryant had two RBIs and Emiliano Gonzalez finished with two hits.

Quartz Hill 11, Rosamond 1: Ethan Avant contributed four hits and five RBIs.

Walnut 6, Charter Oak 0: Christian Longorio threw the shutout.

Narbonne 5, El Camino Real 4: The Gauchos upset the defending City Section champions. Isaiah Flowers had two hits and Jimmy Perez contributed two RBIs. Junior Bladimir Becelinof threw a complete game.

San Fernando 3, Sylmar 2: Steven Villagran improved to 3-0 with a two-hitter. Kevin Gallo had two hits.

Culver City 14, North Torrance 1: Max Sterner threw five innings for the victory.

Birmingham 3, Burbank 2: Birmingham rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh. Jorge Navarrette had a two-run walk-off single.

South Hills 8, Covina 0: Aaron Fong had three hits and four RBIs.

St. John Bosco 3-5, Crescenta Valley 0-1: The Braves got the doubleheader sweep.
