Boys’ basketball: West Ranch makes 12 threes and beats Loyola

There’s little doubt that West Ranch Coach Shant Bicakci has given the green light for his players to shoot threes whenever they see fit. The Wildcats made 12 threes on Monday night in a 65-64 victory over Loyola in the quarterfinals of the #D1Bound tournament at Dorsey.

But it was a free throw by Suren Aghazidian with three seconds left that broke the tie and lifted West Ranch (7-5) to its second consecutive one-point win in the tournament. Last week, the Wildcats defeated Inglewood.

Austin Galuppo, a sophomore, finished with 24 points. Kevin Mcquillen added 18 points. Henry Welsh had 19 points for Loyola (7-3). Welsh got called for a foul trying to come up with an offensive rebound after a missed shot with three seconds left. Josh Lavergne added 17 points.

West Ranch will play Bishop Montgomery in Tuesday’s 7:30 p.m. semifinals at Dorsey. Bishop Montgomery defeated Dorsey, 75-62. Ethan Thompson finished with 24 points and David Singleton 23 for Bishop Montgomery (11-0). Tommie Groce had 19 points and Lafayette Dorsey 15 for the Dons.

The other semifinal will match Cathedral and Calabasas at 6 p.m. at Dorsey. Calabasas stunned Westchester, 53-45. Ryan Murphy scored 24 points. Cathedral defeated Maranatha, 71-59.
