Boys’ basketball: Derrick Taylor leaves St. John Bosco

In an announcement that could set off a series of changes in coaching and player movement, Bellflower St. John Bosco Principal Casey Yeazel said in an email on Friday that basketball Coach Derrick Taylor “will not be returning as head coach” after four years at the school.
“We just agreed to part ways,” Taylor said. “We had a good run and they treated me well.”
Taylor, who left Woodland Hills Taft after building the Toreadors into a City Section powerhouse, guided the Braves to a state Division III championship last season and a Division 3A title in 2013.
The Braves went 18-13 this season behind junior Vance Jackson.
St. John Bosco is part of the competitive Trinity League, and the coaching position is considered a plum high school coaching job.
It adds to an already interesting off season, where Harvard-Westlake and St. Francis are interviewing candidates for open positions.
“We thank Coach Taylor for his efforts over the past four years,” Yeazel said, “and are grateful for the success he has brought to our basketball program. We wish Derrick and his family all the best in the future.”
