Football: Sophomore QB Griffin O’Connor comes through for Edison

When quarterback Grant Lowary went down with a shoulder injury on Edison’s second possession on Thursday night in a Sunset League showdown against Los Alamitos, Coach Dave White turned to untested sophomore Griffin O’Connor.
There was an interception, a lost fumble but also a 34-yard touchdown run and a 10-yard touchdown pass as O’Connor showed his potential and helped lead Edison to a 17-14 win over the Griffins at Huntington Beach.
“Baptism by fire,” White said.
O’Connor completed 12 of 32 passes for 217 yards and also rushed for 65 yards. Not bad for someone who was playing junior varsity all season.
Shaun Colamonico had the 10-yard touchdown catch and an interception. Bobby Jinkins contributed a 46-yard field goal. Edison (3-3, 1-0) received a huge performance from its defense. The Chargers twice stopped Los Alamitos on fourth-down situations in the fourth quarter.
Quarterback Jack Telenko was limited to 70 yards passing. Schuyler Whitehead had 104 yards rushing in 26 carries. Los Alamitos dropped to 2-4.
