Cardinals’ Jaime Garcia thinks he might need surgery

St. Louis Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia told reporters he may need additional shoulder surgery because he’s experiencing nerve issues and numbness in his hand.

Garcia’s comments came as news to General Manager John Mozeliak, who said he hadn’t discussed the situation with the player.

Mozeliak said Saturday the Cardinals had basically ruled Garcia out for the rest of the year and that Garcia had consulted with team trainers. But he said the team believed other options had not been explored.

The 27-year-old Garcia is 3-1 with a 4.12 earned-run average in seven starts this season. He began the year on the 15-day disabled list and was placed there a second time on June 21 with shoulder soreness.

In with the new, out with Milone

Tommy Milone, who threw six shutout innings in Oakland’s victory on Friday, found himself headed to triple-A Sacramento on Saturday.

The Athletics optioned the left-hander to clear the way for right-hander Jeff Samardzija, obtained with Jason Hammel in a trade with the Chicago Cubs, to start Sunday’s series finale against the Toronto Blue Jays.

The A’s will make an additional move when Hammel reports on Sunday.

Friday’s trade was met with excitement in the A’s clubhouse, though that was tempered by the loss of Milone, 6-3 with a 3.55 ERA and .245 opponents batting average in 16 starts for the A’s.
