Redshirt freshman Torian White could solve two problems for UCLA

Torian White could make the job of UCLA offensive line coach Adrian Klemm a little bit easier.

If he can claim the Bruins’ right tackle spot, it would solve two areas of concern: That position and also one of the guard spots, because it would allow senior Jeff Baca to stay there instead of moving over to tackle.

“It would be huge,” Klemm said, adding that White, a 6-foot-5, 285-pound redshirt freshman, “still has a lot of work to do.”

White is a little behind because when camp started he was unavailable while undergoing medical tests prompted by chest pains. The tests revealed a heart murmur and White will undergo a procedure to correct the problem, probably this month.

“It’s something that has been in my family,” said White, who is now practicing. “They just wanted to make sure it was all right before I practiced. It’s not a risk to my life. They just think it would be better if I get the procedure done.”

With White at right tackle and Baca at a guard spot, the Bruins would have all but one of their starting line positions set — and at least three of the starters would have three or more years of eligibility. Left tackle Xavier Su’a-Filo is a sophomore. Center Jake Brendal, like White, is a redshirt freshman.

That would position UCLA for having some consistency on the line, which has been patched together the last four seasons.

Tackling an issue

The Bruins have done “thud” work, meaning almost no live hitting during training camp.

“We had a physical and intense spring practice,” Mora said. “It’s hard to say ‘live, but don’t cut block.’ It’s hard to say, ‘live, but don’t tackle low.’ It’s hard to say, ‘live, but don’t take a shot at a teammate.’ ”

The opener at Rice is a little more than two weeks away.

“The risk that you take when you don’t go live is you miss tackles in the first game,” Mora said. “The risk you take if you go live is you get somebody hurt this close to the season.”
