Racing! Is the Eclipse Awards show over or is it still going on?
Hello, my name is John Cherwa and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we congratulate all the Eclipse Award winners.
The Eclipse Awards are over and this time there was no speech by Perry Martin. If you haven’t seen him accept the award for California Chrome winning horse of the year a year ago, you’ve got to see this. It became an internet sensation because of its, how can we put this, uniqueness. And not in a good way. It was even a running joke during Thursday’s show. So take a look here.
Now, it’s not to say that the evening was long, and I was watching on TV, but I was able to start and finish a Russian novel during the telecast. And I was doing my own translation.
It wasn’t because I was jealous for not being there as a media winner. In fact, in one of the non-televised awards, I was one of two finalists in the best male laptop written horse racing newsletter produced by the L.A. Times Eclipse category. But it was won by the Dodgers Newsletter because its author, and my boss, Houston Mitchell, has a daughter, Hannah, who loves horses.
The night wasn’t a total loss as I got 15 of the 17 awards correct. I missed the two 2-year-old categories. And you can check past newsletters for accuracy. Now, some were easy, but ever try and pick a steeplechase winner having not seen one of those races live in at least a decade and a half?
Before we get too deep into this you can read my straight down-the-middle story right here.
The only one I thought they got wrong for sure was 2-year-old male. Bolt D’Oro had a stellar campaign but in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile got a bad post and bad trip making the 1 1/16 mile race seem like a 1 1/8 mile race. Yet, he still finished third.
Good Magic lost his first two races but then got the perfect trip in the BC Juvenile to win. Second in that race was Solomini, who lost to Bolt in the FrontRunner by almost eight lengths.
We’ll see what happens should they meet in the Kentucky Derby.
I thought the smartest speech of the night was by Frank Stronach. The most heartfelt were by the people representing the disasters in Puerto Rico and San Luis Rey Downs.
My least favorite speech was by the head of the China Horse Club because I’m still looking for an explanation on why they fired Simon Callaghan over a silks mixup on Abel Tasman. (And, like I’ve said, it’s never, ever a bad idea to move your horse to Bob Baffert’s barn. But answer the question when asked about it.)
I wondered how Mike Smith felt standing on the stage when West Coast won the best 3-year-old male, yet he’s riding Collected instead of West Coast in the Pegasus. (He says Baffert made the decision.)
And, it was odd that the highlight they used for Solomini in the 2-year-old male category was the stretch drive of him winning the Los Alamitos Futurity only to be disqualified to third for interference near the finish. It’s like Mother Teresa winning a humanitarian award and the clip is of her running a red light, that is if she drove.
Anyway, that’s it for this year.
Who goofed, I’ve got to know?
That would be me again, and I really missed on this. Memory served me that the Eclipse Awards last year were on NBCSN, but, in fact, it was only the last half hour that was streamed live on NBCSports.com. (That’s what you get when you watch a lot of programming on your computer screen. Lines blur.)
Last year the full program was carried on TVG2. So, in fact, this year moving to the main TVG channel is an upgrade. See, I do say nice things about TVG, although did it really have to crawl the odds from different tracks across the bottom of the screen at times? (Oh, eight minutes to Delaware, nine to Hawthorne and 10 to race one in Australia.)
Who goofed, part 2
Yes, we left the Santa Anita entries out of Thursday’s print edition. But it was nothing more than a mistake. Please don’t think we are going back to our short-lived policy of not running them. If we do, and there are no plans to, I’ll let you guys know first.
Another free offer
Rob Henie, the brains behind our weekly handicapping lesson, must have had a good weekend because he’s feeling generous again. Santa Anita review
The best race on Thursday’s card was an allowance race down the 6 ½-furlong turf course for fillies and mares, 4 and up. Miss Southern Miss was the upset winner by 1¼ lengths in the $58,000 purse race.
Kent Desormeaux was the jockey for his brother, and one of the most underrated trainers at the track, Keith.
“It’s hard to believe on pedigree, but she’s a sprinter,” Keith Desormeaux told Mike Willman of Santa Anita. “She’s by More Than Ready and she’s out of a Stormy Atlantic mare … but she’s a sprinter. … It was nice to see [Kent] get through between horses and not stop her momentum.”
Miss Southern Miss paid $17.80, $9.20 and $6.40. Zaffinah was second and Lake Time was third.
Santa Anita preview
Friday’s eight-race card with a 1 p.m. first post is looking a little better as far as field size goes. Only one race with six horses, one with seven and the other six have more. The numbers, in order, are: 8, 6, 7, 9, 8, 9, 9, 10. There are three turf races, the first, fifth and seventh, with the rail at 20 feet. They are saving the course for Cal Cup day on Saturday.
No stakes races on Friday, just two allowance/optional claimers, the second and seventh, with $56,000 purses. The sixth is a maiden special weight for 3-year-old fillies, worth a purse of $54,000. The rest are all claiming races.
Bob Ike’s SA play of the day
SEVENTH RACE: No. 9 Mesut (4-1)
Lightly raced and improving 4-year-old gelding from the Carla Gaines barn closed stoutly to beat maidens over the downhill course last time and might be able to score right back. He is drawn well outside, should get a legitimate pace at which to run and is ridden back by Eclipse Award-winning apprentice jockey Evin Roman.
Thursday’s result: Spin Me a Kiss set the pace but tired late and finished fifth.

Los Alamitos weekend preview
I’ve decided to leave this weekly segment in the hands of Orlando Gutierrez, marketing and media maven at Los Al. So, take it away, Orlando.
“There will be a Pick 6 carryover of $10,033 on Friday night, starting with the third race. That race will have seven thoroughbreds in this 870-yard race headed by Scene Enuf, who has finished in the money the last 10 times. Scene Enuf, the 5-2 second choice, has finished in the top three in 13 of 15 career races. Who Loves Eddie is the 2-1 favorite in his first nighttime start at Los Alamitos. The Square Eddie filly debuted at Los Alamitos on Dec. 16 and returns after a 5 1/2 furlong out of the money finish at Santa Anita.
“Sunday will have five trials to the 350-yard Los Alamitos Maiden Stakes. Horses are eligible to compete in the Maiden trials if they had not won a race as of Dec. 1. There are 11 horses that have won since the cutoff date led by Jacque On Fire, who won her debut on Dec. 30. The trials will also feature Shangrilalala, who ran third in the Kindergarten Futurity, but remains a maiden, and Missmerizing, seventh in the Kindergarten yet also a maiden after 10 career starts.
“Darling Farms, Jaime Gomez and Ernesto Solis’ J Fire Up, who set a track record last year for earnings by a filly or mare during a single season at Los Alamitos, was named the 2017 Pacific Coast Quarter Horse Racing Association Horse of the Year at the annual awards banquet Thursday night at Los Alamitos. Bred and trained by Gomez, the California-bred filly by Kiddy Up was also named PCQHRA champion 2-year-old filly. J Fire Up finished her brilliant season with seven wins in nine starts and earnings of $1,430,411. She was only $6,354 shy of the all-time single season mark in earnings here set by the then 2-year-old gelding Tres Passes ($1,436,765) in 2008. Enrique Gonzalez of EG High Desert Farms received the Frank Vessels, Sr. Memorial Award in recognition for Outstanding Contributions to the Sport of Quarter Horse Racing, while the PCQHRA posthumously awarded the late Brad McKinzie with the Sam Thompson Award, presented to an individual who displays leadership within the Los Alamitos racing community. McKinzie died in August.”
Ed Burgart L.A. play of the day
SEVENTH RACE: No. 7 Lil Attitude (2-1)
She was loaded with energy past the wire in last third-place try from the rail post at 100 yards. Sophomore filly now moves to the outside while getting an additional 230 yards. I loved her prior ¾-length maiden win over next-out maiden $5,000 first-place finishers Frostys Sis and Single N Rare.
