Every Miami Dolphins head coach (1966-2019)

The face (particularly jaw) of the Miami Dolphins, Shula (73 wins while with Baltmore) ended up with 347 career victories and two Super Bowl championships, including one won in January of 1973 by the NFL's lone perfect team.

List of each of the 13 Miami Dolphins head coaches. Brian Flores became the Dolphins’ 10th since 2004, including three interim coaches.

Jimmy Johnson (1996-1999): 38-31

His stint with the Dolphins looks better and better as time passes and the ignominious 62-7 disaster that ended his and Dan Marino‘s NFL careers in 2000 gets farther away. He drafted Jason Taylor, Zach Thomas, Patrick Surtain and Sam Madison and is the only coach other than Shula to have won multiple playoff games with the Dolphins, including the team’s first road postseason win in 27 years.

Tony Sparano (2008-2011): 29-32

Sparano presided over a record-tying turnaround as the Dolphins, behind Chad Pennington and an effective running game, went from 1-15 to 11-5 and made the playoffs in his first season. In the two ensuing years, his Dolphins were 7-6, only to flame out with 0-3 finishes. Miami started the 2011 season 0-7 and was 4-9 when Sparano was fired with three games remaining. He died in 2018.

Dan Campbell (2015): 5-7

Campbell was named Dolphins coach after Joe Philbin was fired during the 2015 season. The team’s inspired play under Campbell led to owner Steve Ross saying, “I love Dan Campbell.”

Adam Gase (2016-2018): 23-25

In his three seasons, Gase led Miami to a 23-25 regular-season record and one playoff appearance in 2016 (a loss at Pittsburgh). He was the 12th head coach in team history.

He wrote and voiced a web-animated parody of the Miami Dolphins in 2004 and 2005 that earned an EPpy, beating out the New York Times and Toronto Star. He was a Dolphins beat writer in 2010.

Keven Lerner

Keven Lerner graduated from Florida State University in 1990. After an internship with the New Jersey Nets, he spent the next eight years as Lead Editor for ESPN SportsTicker in Jersey City, N.J. After a two-year stint at USAToday.com, he joined the Sun Sentinel in 1997 - just in time to cover the Marlins’ first world championship.
