USC’s ‘Super Six’ freshmen
USC played 11 freshmen in its season-opening 52-13 win over Fresno State. These six in particular made impressive debuts:
Bryce Dixon
Tight end
6-4, 240
Ventura St. Bonaventure
Second-team Parade All-American made 64 receptions for 781 yards and 14 touchdowns as a high school senior. Also played basketball, averaging 10.4 points and 5.8 rebounds.
Adoree’ Jackson
Cornerback, wide receiver
5-11, 185
Gardena Serra
First-team Parade All-American rushed for 639 yards and nearly a 10-yard per carry average. He also caught 38 passes for 812 yards and took back three kick returns for touchdowns.
Toa Lobendahn
Left guard
6-3, 280
La Habra
All-State in high school as a junior at Lakewood and as a senior at La Habra. Graduated early and enrolled at USC in order to participate in spring practice.
Damien Mama
Right guard
6-5, 370
Bellflower St. John Bosco
First-team Parade All-American anchored the line of a high school team that, his senior season, went 16-0 and won the state championship open division bowl game.
JuJu Smith
Wide receiver
6-2, 210
Long Beach Poly
The Moore League player of the year as a senior, he was a triple threat in high school — offense, defense and special teams — who was considered more likely to play defense in college.
Viane Talamaivao
Offensive guard
6-3, 330
Corona Centennial
Second-team Parade All-American was a three-year starter in high school and as a senior anchored the line for one of the Southland’s highest-scoring offenses.
